Cacao-Maca Smoothie

When I was in Seattle last year, I tried a smoothie at Chaco Cayon Café that I had to replicate at home (it wasn’t enough to eat it every single day on my trip. It was a delicious, thick, chocolately smoothie and tasted like a milkshake.

I’ve made my version with a few more foods I like to include in my daily diet.  The addition of maca adds a nutty flavor and the cacao makes it perfectly rich.  It is also filling, and a great pre-workout (or bedtime) snack.  I’m pretty sure I drink eat it as dessert. It is my comfort food.

While the Chaco Canyon smoothie had some added sugar, this version, the Cacao-Maca smoothie does not. And it doesn’t need it.  It is a must make today sort of recipe.

Cacao-Maca Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 T Cacao Powder

1 t maca powder

1 c raw hemp milk

1 banana (frozen makes for a think, creamy and cold smoothie)

1 t vanilla

Instructions:

Blend. Enjoy.  I even add some spinach some days, and it is still oh so delicious!

  1. I have no idea why any smoothie has sugar in it. There are so many natural ways to sweeten. Love that you use a banana for this one! Can’t wait to try it! Thanks for sharing it at Raw Foods Thursdays!

    • I totally agree! When I read about people putting stevia in their smoothies I just get confused. Not that I have anything against stevia (or medjool dates, etc, it just sounds way too sweet to me)!

  2. I think that the U.S. palate is still too sweet-centric, and natural things give a great amount of sweetness without entering ‘buttercream frosting’ territory …

    I love the looks of this, and you KNOW I’m constantly on the hunt for new ideas now! 🙂

  3. I don’t have any macs but I love your basic smoothie so much that I’m tempted to get macs just so I can try this. I assume I can use any non-dairy milk, not just raw hemp?

    • Yes – absolutely. I’d say a heartier milk like soy is probably better. Also, you can make it without maca, but it’s better with it!

  4. Yum, I love the choc maca combination! I’ve never tried hemp milk – I would love to though. Australia is still a bit funny with ‘hemp’ products, you can buy the seeds and oil at some health food shops but I think there is a law preventing them from being advertised as for ingestion. When I worked at a herb shop, we sold hemp oil and had to say it was for ‘external use only’. So silly! Maybe I will have to try and make some hemp milk when I next get some seeds.

    • That is funny – but I understand. I don’t think I really knew the difference until way too late in my 20’s! I like soy milk in this smoothie too if you are okay with soy!

  5. Looks delicious! I’m going to make this smoothie this afternoon with the spinach. I’ll have to use my almond milk because that’s what I have in the fridge. It’s a beautiful morning here – this smoothie will be perfect before my long walk.

  6. I also make this smoothy all the time, frozen banana in here is the most creamy smoothy! I agree! Yum yum yumm! I love maca for its health reasons & it is a bit malty in flavour too! 😉 Yummm! xx
